Manchester United– are reportedly hoping to make a monster move for highly-rated Wolves striker Matheus Cunha in the final days of the January transfer window.
News reports that the Red Devils are on the trail of the in-form 25-year-old attacker as they look to bolster their attacking options with current striker duo Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee both struggling for form and confidence in front of goal.
Hojlund is currently on an eight-match streak without finding the net and has only managed to register just two strikes in 18 Premier League appearances. Meanwhile, summer signing Zirkzee is without a goal in nine league matches and has found the net just three times in 23 matches since making the move from Italian side Bologna.
Man Utd’s goal woes continue..
Overall, the Red Devils have scored just 15 Premier League goals in 10 matches under Ruben Amorim and as it stands, Hojlund and Zirkzee are struggling to even get involved in the game and find space in attacking areas.
United as a whole recorded just one shot on target, and four shots in total, across the entire 90 minutes during the 1-0 victory against Fulham, while also completing fewer passes than the hosts despite having a significantly more experienced and expensive group of players.
Hojlund was given the nod from the off but could not muster up an effort on goal. He managed only 17 touches of the ball, with one of them inside Fulham’s area. Meanwhile, Zirkzee, who was introduced during the second half, failed to get even a single touch in the Fulham area, and was only able to contribute five passes after appearing as an impact sub.
“I would be surprised if Hojlund isn’t getting a few fingers pointed at him,” said Rio Ferdinand on TNT Sport. “Hold the ball up. Hojlund is the platform for them to get up the pitch. Manchester United cannot get any good possession around the final third when their number nine is not able to hold the ball up.”
Why Manchester United have entered the race to sign Matheus Cunha
United are in desperate need of a goalscorer to fire the team up the table – and the recent stand off between Marcus Rashford and Ruben Amorim has only amplified the need to sign a clinical finisher. While Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku is currently under consideration this January, the most likely target, according to News report, is Wolves captain Matheus Cunha, who faces an uncertain future at Molineux after stalling over a new deal.
Cunha is not only an excellent finisher, but also a player with incredible technique, pace, agility and the ability to create chances for himself and team-mates almost single-handedly at times this season. The nine-time Brazil international, who is the nation’s Under-23 record-holder with 21 goals in 23 appearances at that age group, is understood to be a player Amorim rates highly although Wolves are reportedly commanding a figure of around £70m.
Manchester fans understands the Old Trafford club are currently in a position where they will forced to sell to buy, which could mean that this deal is dependent on the futures of both Rashford and Garnacho, who have been heavily linked with moves away this month.
